An exploration of place.

My work on paper investigates the concept of “place.” Place has been described to me as location plus emotion - I think I agree with that. Maybe it’s space plus meaning. Both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, especially in the cooler climes, give my life meaning. Watercolor, with its inherent unpredictability and translucency, allows me to capture not just the image of a landscape, but its atmosphere and emotion.

Each painting begins with observation and presence. I often work en plein air, immersing myself in the landscape to better understand its textures, colors, and moods. The spontaneity of watercolor mirrors the ever-changing environment; no brushstroke can be taken back, much like a moment in nature that quickly passes.

I started my art life as a figure drawer. Gesture is key to understanding the human form, and remains vital to me as I explore my surrounding landscape environment. When encountering a new land, painting is a way of deep-ooking and noticing details. My work certainly isn’t photorealist, but I do hope (shout out to Peter Reynolds) that it is real-ish…

I also work in clay! If you would like to see work using wood, salt, high temperatures, and iron-rich stoneware, click the photo…
